Introduction

We are all witnesses to the rate that the reading culture in our society is falling at an alarming rate.

Like always in any societal problem, those who are worst hit are the people in the rural areas. The little efforts made by governments toward addressing this problem are expended in the urban areas.

The Ivory Readership Club deems it fit to meet the needs of this neglected group by making Readership Promotion in the Rural Areas the major thrust of her activities in 2008

Justification

  1. This programme is important because information is the thin line that separates poverty from affluence. Therefore to improve the quality of lives of the rural dwellers we have to enhance their capacity to acquire relevant information by helping them develop good reading habit.
  2. Also most of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the United Nations are information based. The realization of Education for all, Health for all, Poverty Alleviation/ Eradiation etc., are all dependent on the populace being informed of the possibilities that exist and how they can exploit them. No matter what the government does, if there is no matching response from the populace no positive result will be achieved. If the rural dwellers read they will be in a better position to understand the programmes of the government and therefore give matching response.
  3. When global and national problems arise like HIV/Aids pandemic, polio etc., you need an informed public to be able to combat it. If we inculcate good reading habit in the rural dwellers they will be able to read up detailed facts about any issue that arises and the remedies. In fact there is no end to the benefits that will accrue from this programme.
