History The IRC was started by a group of writers and other literary-minded individuals who felt challenged by the mediocrity, the charlatanism and the sycophancy that have most unfortunately, permeated all facets of life in Nigeria. The sudden oil wealth and the long years of military dictatorship perverted minds of people from the basic ingredients of civilization like reading culture. As a result people’s ideas and visions became unfortunately limited to that which they can see with their eyes or touch with their hands. The unbridled love for power and material wealth replaced the love for the intrinsic values of life. And reading culture for instance, ceased to exist in people’s programmes. Even those who go to school only read to pass examinations and obtain certificates. The quest for knowledge is therefore relegated to the background. But it is the quest for knowledge that triggers research which leads to breakthroughs. So it can be seen that the greatest inventions in life begins with the simple habit of opening a book... Mission and Vision Mission To help in the promotion and sustenance of a good reading culture in the Nigerian society so that people will have the information they need for personal and professional advancement.
Vision A free and progressive Nigerian society where people are unchained by the knowledge they acquired through reading. Officers Tony Alum – President and CEO Born 1963. He graduated in Library Science / English from University of Nigeria Nsukka. Among his other activities, he has been the President of Association for African Integration in Torino, Italy. He is a writer and the author of Images from a Broken Mirror : a Story from Porta Pallozo.
Catherine Ozoude – Secretary. Born 1958. She is a graduate of History from University of Nigeria Nsukka. She has been the President of International First Aid Society (IFAS) Enugu State. She is a writer and Educationist. She teaches at College of Immaculate Conception, Enugu.
Emeka Agbayi - Vice President Born 1966. He has M.A. English from the University of Nigeria Nsukka. He is a writer and has worked in various positions in advertising and publishing Currently he is the editor of The Bond and NLNG- The Magazine both publications of Nigeria LNG limited.
He is the author of: Stars Die – a collection of poems.
Chijioke Agbo – Legal Adviser Born 1963 –Lawyer and solicitor. He has his LLM from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. He is the CEO of Center Rights an NGO on conflict resolution.
Ngozi Ugwuagu – Treasurer. Born 1970. She is a graduate of Institute of Management and Technology Enugu. Teaches at Community Secondary School, Ngwo-Uno. Advisory Board - Dr (Mrs) Nancy Achebe
